While we're on the topic of website design, I'd like to pose a question to all of you about the design of this website. When I first started the blog, I chose the white text on black background just because I like the way it looks, but recently I've read comments by several people (not here) saying that they find it hard to read white text on a dark background.
So, dear readers, would you prefer to have black text on a white background? If a majority prefer black on white, I'll switch over at some point.
So please vote: White on black or black on white?
If you vote, you'll be entered into the website design random drawing for a 5 ml spray bottle of an Olympic Orchids perfume. The drawing will take place on Thursday, August 16.
I quite like the white on black, I think it looks classy and I have no problems reading it. However, if you've got people who find it difficult, I'd definitely consider changing it.
ReplyDeleteDionne, no one has complained specifically about this blog. The comments I read were on other blogs, commenting about the general issue of ease or difficulty of reading.
DeleteSeconding Dionne (again). My old eyes manage it, but it is generally harder. Since I find what you have to say interesting, it's easy to make the effort.
ReplyDeleteRemember the old days when computer screens were black with green and then amber text? Not easy to spend a day on.
Just don't ever do yellow on gray -- a big trend in magazines. Completely unreadable for me -- maybe that's the intent since the market is so youth-oriented. (Can't hear that audible only to youth ring-tone either).

Lindaloo, I had to laugh at your comment about yellow on gray (or any pastel shade on pastel). Low contrast and light colors seem to be trendy right now. For the past few years, every quarter some of my students choose this sort of washed-out color scheme for their Powerpoint presentations and then are surprised because no one can read their slides when they're projected onto the big screen. Age has nothing to do with it, since the students who can't read the yellow on gray, pink on yellow, or beige on beige slides are mostly young.
DeleteI vote white on black. It is easy for me to read and the black background helps to set off your great photos. Gail
ReplyDeleteGail, that's exactly why I like the black background - it makes the photos look good.
DeleteI love the look of white on black. It is harder on the eyes, though. If you decide to start writing really loooooong posts, you can switch, but for now, I'm fine!
ReplyDeleteWhite on black does strain my eyes a bit, but I'm in age-related denial so I vote for keeping it! I love the way it looks and agree with Gail that the contrast of the black background works really well with your photos.
ReplyDeleteI vote for white on black. I think the black background makes the pictures pop more.
ReplyDeleteIf you move to black on white, at least avoid yellow headlines. Gourmet did that with a cookbook & now they're closed :)
(For true eyestrain, I've never found anything that beats red text on a blue background.)
I am used to this background but I think header image can do a lot for blog... and imagines within posts.
ReplyDeleteSo are you saying you would prefer full-width images instead of the embedded ones that I use?
