HAPPY NEW YEAR, WINNER OF THE RANDOM DRAWING, AND A NEW GIVEAWAY

I don’t even need to comment on what a bizarre year 2017 was in the grand scheme of things. We all know it. On a personal level, though, it was a good year. We were able to travel some and spend time with good friends and family, I’m still enjoying teaching at the university, we live in a beautiful and relatively sane part of the world, and the orchid and perfume businesses are both thriving and growing. The perfume winter sale was phenomenal, and we are still shipping orders out in great volume. This year I had the foresight to have big supply of stock and packing materials on hand, so we didn’t run out of anything. As we move into 2018, I want to let my customers, students, family, friends, and readers know how much I appreciate you all.

The winner of this week’s drawing for 100 g of samples is ANNE. Please contact me at olympicorchids at gmail dot com or on Facebook PM with your shipping address.

This past week there was a small disaster in the closet where I keep extra clothes, perfumes, samples, some jewelry-making supplies, and some other miscellaneous things. The bar that I hang clothes on also supports a wire shelf, and this whole apparatus has fallen down twice, scattering clothes and boxes of perfume samples all over the floor. I know, I know, I have too much of everything. After the first collapse I went through the clothes and eliminated some of them. The whole thing was put back on the wall and the sample boxes went back up on the shelf. This morning, the whole thing collapsed again. We are going to need to reinforce the bar and shelf, and lighten the load even more. I don’t think samples are all that heavy, but the wire shelves are pretty flimsy, too, like the ones in the photo. It's probably amazing that they have held up this long.

This week I will be giving away another 100g  of random perfume samples, so leave a comment about anything that strikes your fancy. Some prompts might be what you’re looking forward to in 2018 and whether you’ve ever had a shelf collapse due to putting too much stuff on it. The winner will be announced on Monday, January 8.

  4. Thanks Ellen! No collapsing shelves yet, but I have a few groaning under the weight of too many impulse purchases. I'm also looking forward to some warmer weather. The East Coast is currently in the deep freeze with no end in sight.

    1. Anne, your package will go out today. I've been reading about the horrible cold weather in most of the country. Fortunately, we've been spared the worst of it.

  5. My disaster: having one of my leaky perfumes take the varnish off my dresser! Oh well, covered with a runner now, and all bottles rest on glass trays. Peace and Joy to all in the New Year!

    1. Nelle, having a clothes bar collapse is (for me) a good inspiration to get rid of some excess things. You're entered in the drawing.

  8. I had a disaster last year when the shelf where I keep my (expensive) makeup palettes collapsed. I had a ton of broken eyeshadows and several of the palettes were irretrievable. I cried. But I did learn my lesson about overloading flimsy wire shelves!

    1. Triniti, I have a makeup shelf like that, too, but fortunately it has not yet collapsed. I can imagine the disaster if it ever does. You're entered in the drawing.

  9. You did mention that we could leave a comment about anything since I did not have a closet shelf issue. Let’s see... my New Year’s resolution is to try one new recipe every week. I moved 1.5 years ago to my current rental abode to be less than 5 miles away from my ailing Mother. I do though miss my network of friends, that are now many hours drive away, whereby we had at least monthly gatherings of food and conversation. I have too busy to find new “quality” local friends. This New Year I am looking forward to Trump loosing his internet access. And I am looking forward to more sniffing and wearing of cologne and perfume. Today I doused myself three times, about every four hours, with my Winter Sale bottle of California Chocolate.

  10. Martin, What a great New Year's resolution! I wish I were your neighbor so that I could try all of those new dishes along with the conversation.

I'm so glad the California Chocolate reached you safely and that you're enjoying it. Best wishes for improvement in your mother's health.

    You're entered in the drawing.

  11. Hi Ellen! I've never had a shelf collapse - but we added DIY shelves to our kitchen long ago and I was ALWAYS paranoid about it, hehe. I'm looking forward to 2018 - I'm due with our second son in 7 weeks (give or take) and I'm hoping we'll be able to adjust as a family. I'm also finally able to tolerate perfumes again and am gloriously basking in Blackbird - which reminds me of home (yay WA!) and is going on my birthday gift list for sure in a couple of weeks. It's truly a masterpiece, Ellen!

    1. HI Sun Mi! Congratulations on your 2nd son! I'm glad you're able to enjoy perfume again now that you're through that weird stage of pregnancy when random odors can be so upsetting. I'm so glad you're enjoying Blackbird. You're in the drawing.
