What is the Perfume Project?

This blog is a constantly evolving forum for thoughts on perfume, perfume-making, plants (especially orchids and flora of the Pacific Northwest) and life in general. It started out chronicling the adventures of Olympic Orchids Perfumes, established in July 2010, and has expanded in other directions. A big part of the blog is thinking about the ongoing process of learning and experimentation that leads to new perfumes, the exploration of perfumery materials, the theory and practice of perfume making, the challenges of marketing perfumes and other fragrance products, and random observations on philosophy and society. Spam comments will be marked as such and deleted; any comments that go beyond the boundaries of civil discourse will also be deleted. I am grateful to all of you, the readers, who contribute to the blog by commenting and making this a truly interactive perfume project.

A HOLIDAY GIVEAWAY

After going through some old documents, I’m pretty sure I forgot to send out one of the “goodie boxes” from a giveaway that I held longer ago than I like to think about. I feel terrible about it! I’m going to get that out this week with my apologies for letting it fall through the cracks.

I’ve received a lot from the perfume community, both tangible and intangible over the past two years, so I’d like to keep the good karma going by passing on some items that I have stored away.

The first is a gently read copy of Alyssa Harad’s book, Coming to my Senses: A Story of Perfume, Pleasure, and an Unlikely Bride. The title says it all. It’s a fun read for anyone interested in fragrance.

The second is a 50 ml bottle of Olympic Orchids Red Cattleya, in parfum concentration. It’s one of the original decorative bulb sprayer bottles that I bought, but quickly realized that not all of the bulb sprayers work reliably. The label is the original one, before I redesigned it. If you win it, it will come with a screw cap, as well as the retro-looking bulb sprayer in case you want to give it a try.

The third is a selection of various fragrance oil samples that have been sent to me along with perfumer’s alcohol and other raw materials that I’ve ordered. I don’t generally use fragrance oils, but surely someone would like to have them.

There may be more to come, but this is a start. If you would like to enter the drawing, all you have to do is leave a comment saying which item you would like to win.

  2. Dear Ellen,

The Red Cattleya would be at the top of my list. (Alyssa's book would be second.)

That is a wonderful giveaway! Thanks!

  4. Well my first (Red Cattleya) and second (Alyssa Harad) choices have been spoken for, but I'm certainly willing to educate my nose with some mystery oils.

    1. Lindaloo, It's fine if you want to have Red Cattleya as your first choice and ALyssa's book as your second. That just means that whoever doesn't win the Red Cattleya will get their second choice, and whoever doesn't win the book will get the mystery oils.
