What is the Perfume Project?

This blog is a constantly evolving forum for thoughts on perfume, perfume-making, plants (especially orchids and flora of the Pacific Northwest) and life in general. It started out chronicling the adventures of Olympic Orchids Perfumes, established in July 2010, and has expanded in other directions. A big part of the blog is thinking about the ongoing process of learning and experimentation that leads to new perfumes, the exploration of perfumery materials, the theory and practice of perfume making, the challenges of marketing perfumes and other fragrance products, and random observations on philosophy and society. Spam comments will be marked as such and deleted; any comments that go beyond the boundaries of civil discourse will also be deleted. I am grateful to all of you, the readers, who contribute to the blog by commenting and making this a truly interactive perfume project.

THE FIRST OCTOBER DRAWING

The seasons march on and we are on the dark side of the fall equinox. Halloween and the US midterm elections are only about a month away, so it’s time to … have another drawing. No matter how much excess stuff I give away, it seems like more accumulates.

This giveaway includes the usual 100 g of samples plus an assortment of miscellaneous cosmetics, all in pristine (i.e., unused) condition. Just leave a comment.

I will be writing some regular posts this month, so the question you should answer to be entered in the drawing is what general topics you would like to read about.

    1. nelle265, I guess you're in the drawing. I could write about the weather and climate change.

    2. Maybe a post about how weather can enhance the notes of a fragrance or turn a fragrance someone might think is awful in the summer into something amazing in the fall or winter.

  2. Happy October! We’re about 20 degrees warmer than usual in the mid-Atlantic . I would like to read more about where you get your inspiration from when creating a new perfume. Is it a specific material, something visual or maybe just a mood/feeling.

    1. Anne, writing about where I get my inspiration for perfume should be easy to do. I'm working on a couple of things right now. You're in the drawing.

  3. I'd like to read about perfume raw materials, ingredients. About your favourite ingredients, perfumes (modern and vintage), where does the inspiration for your fragrances come from. It will be interesting to read about your way to perfumery and future plans.

    1. Julia, another vote for inspiration! I will also continue writing about ingredients. You're in the drawing.

  4. I've tried a few of the Zoologist fragrances (including Bat) and I love the idea of different perfumers contributing their perspectives to a specific concept or brand. When I think of Guerlain, Le Labo or Lush, I think of a certain type of fragrance. If you were given a giant commission and free rein to create a perfume for these or any other houses, how would you use your own experiences and creativity but make it identifiable as a part of the brand?

    1. Triniti,

Interesting question. How would I create a Guerlain, Lush or Le Lab perfume? Get them to hire me, and we'll see! You're in the drawing.

  5. I just deleted several obnoxious spam "comments". The bots are out and about. Ugh!
